Nek Chand’s mosaic world in London!

I always tell people who come on my mosaic workshops about the wonderful work and world of Nek Chand. His work appeals to me for so many reasons. He is self taught. He just quietly got on with creating his mosaic village (now the most visited tourist site in India) for years before he was discovered. He has a vision. He is working – still at the age of 88 – to fulfill it. His work fits into the ‘outsider art’ movement.  He has done all this in community (see Nek Chand Foundation) and to cap it all, the hundreds (thousands?)  of mosaic sculptures are made with recycled materials – stuff that was destined for the scrap heap. Ticks all the boxes for me…

So what a treat to discover his work being exhibited right here in London at the Southbank Centre’s Museum of Everything . I feel a bit silly that I did not know about it sooner but I was so glad I got to see, right in front of me, those fabled images that I show my mosaic students on each mosaic course – to touch them, examine them from close up and and photograph them. Here are a few pics…and at the end of the images a short video of this amazing work in its original garden in India. I hope it inspires you to quietly get on with what is yours to do…

Warm greetings Concetta! How wonderful to have discovered a ‘soul-mate’ over the internet! I too am a mosaic fanatic and have been in love with Nek Chand’s work for many years. Unfortunately I have never been able to see his work from close up and have had to suffice with gazing at the wonderful pictures in his book. I love the projects you do within your community and maybe one day I will venture to London and be able to meet up with you. Until then, I’ll continue to visit your website and take note of all the wonderful things you produce. Keep up the admirable work!
    Regards
    Judith

It is a must to go and see his work in person if you are a mosaic crazy. It is acres of mosaic and the scale and enormity of his work cant be comprehended unless you see it and walk through it.
Just catch a plane to delhi and then catch a train to chandigarh!

  6. I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your site.

It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more often.
Did you hire out a designer to create your theme? Great work!
