It starts with a possibility…
…a concept…celebration, growth, the passing of time, establishing roots, a support system, growth bursting out, celebrating the beauty and history of materials from Topps Tiles, the UK’s largest tile retailer …
…sketching, drawing …a vision in the minds eye…
…then the hard work begins…turning the ethereal into the material…
…handling the solid stuff that is to make a mosaic, drawing, scaling up, cutting, shaping, trying things this way and that…
…dealing with the practical (a large piece 2m50 x 1m80), drawing and commissioning a large metal frame, hanging systems, transportation logistics…
…working, working, working 6 and 7 day weeks for 7 weeks…intense immersion in process, colour, texture and form…
…final finishes, grouting, cleaning, re-cleaning, polishing again and again – loving strokes to the beauty that has emerged…
…until finally saying goodbye as the piece that has been born from all this labour leaves home…
We celebrated the unveiling of the Topps Tree last weekend…in a week the official unveiling of the mosaic in its new home!
For those of you who want to know about the process of how this tree was made, I will do a detailed blog post very soon – you will have to bear with me as I am having real computer problems at the moment which is making it very hard for me to work with my photos…. In the meantime, I hope you have enjoyed looking at the pics of this beautiful mosaic – I am SO pleased with how this vision turned into reality…!
